  • Have used this unit now for nearly one year underway over about 3,000 nm. Vessel = 42\' Sloop.USE: I use this unit installed AT THE HELM in an open cockpit. This unit is installed in the bracket mounted at the helm for passages that typically last from a few hours to perhaps two days. Then the unit is disconnected and stored below in a dry location.Using the GP33 in this way is consistent with advertised applications. For the price the unit has performed acceptably with two comments. Note: We normally pre-program waypoints (taken from paper charts) into this unit.*1. The software does not allow the configuration of continuous \"Ship Up\" navigation. The Ship ICON can be held in the center of the display but this is not SHIP UP. SHIP UP means that as you look between the horizon and the screen the ship icon should be facing \"UP\" as it moves along the pre-programmed route (waypoint to waypoint) rather than pointing towards the unit\'s perceived compass heading (which the GP33 does). This requires some interpretation and can be confusing to crew members. Having SHIP UP is available on other units by other manufacturer\'s and is a failing of this unit. For those seeking to purchase a low cost GPS I would confirm that the unit can be configured for Continuous SHIP UP Display.2. The connectors on the rear of the instrument are corroding. I was quite surprised at this since it is advertised as water resistant. The power connector and the Antenna connector are corroding and must be cleaned frequently. In my opinion connectors with bodies made of Delrin or other strong (non brittle) plastic would be preferable to that used in theGP33.* Experience level: Licensed 100 Ton master, 15 years experience cruising and prior use with other GPS units, radar, SSB, etc. Comment: The prudent mariner who plans to cruise open waters, having any GPS or Plotter does not preclude the need for paper charts onboard.Capt Mitch - Questions: bluesloop12@yahoo.com
  • I really like the furuno gp 33\'s . I own two of them and they supply GPS signal for my computer\'s navigation systems. I have owned them for over ten years and they work really well. I have a 76 trawler and we fish off of San Francisco. We have lots of closed areas and we need good gps signal to keep in the open fishing areas . I have a 100 ton captains license and these gps units have done well for me.
